CPTPP Tariff Savings 2026: Import Duty-Free from 11 Countries

By TariffCalc Editorial Team

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) gives Canada preferential trade access to 10 countries across the Asia-Pacific region.

CPTPP Member Countries

Australia, Brunei, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. The United Kingdom joined in 2023.

Major Benefits for Canadian Importers

  • Japanese automobiles and parts: Reduced duties on vehicles and auto parts
  • Vietnamese textiles and electronics: Preferential rates on clothing, footwear, and consumer electronics
  • Australian minerals and agriculture: Duty-free access for many raw materials
  • Malaysian electronics: Lower duties on semiconductor components and electronic assemblies

Duty Elimination Schedule

CPTPP duties are being phased out over time. Some goods received immediate duty-free treatment, while others follow a staging schedule:

  • Category A: Duty-free on entry into force
  • Category B: Phased out over 3 years
  • Category C: Phased out over 5-7 years
  • Category D: Phased out over 10+ years

Rules of Origin

CPTPP uses cumulation rules, meaning components from any CPTPP member can count toward meeting origin requirements. This makes it easier for goods with multi-country supply chains to qualify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which countries are members of the CPTPP?

The CPTPP has 12 members: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam, and the United Kingdom (joined 2023).

Are CPTPP duty rates still being phased in?

Yes. CPTPP uses staging categories (A through D+) to phase out duties over time. Category A items were duty-free immediately, while others may take 3 to 10+ years. TariffCalc shows the current rate based on the phase-in schedule.

Can I use CPTPP for goods with components from multiple member countries?

Yes. CPTPP allows cumulation, meaning components from any CPTPP member country can count toward meeting the rules of origin. This is especially useful for goods with multi-country supply chains across Asia-Pacific.
